A SMALL TOOL FOR YOUR NETWORK
SHA-256 text hash calculator
Compute SHA-256 and SHA-512 digests of UTF-8 text, with hexadecimal output and byte counts. Text is processed locally in your browser.
Ready. Run the tool to see your result.
How to use this tool
- Enter text exactly, retaining spaces, case and line breaks.
- Calculate SHA-256 and SHA-512 over its UTF-8 bytes.
- Compare complete hexadecimal outputs; even a one-character change normally changes the digest.
A digest helps compare content, but hashing is not encryption and does not hide guessable data such as short passwords. Input is UTF-8 without automatic Unicode normalization. This independent tool is not the official Surfshark website.
Worked example
Example input
hello (without a newline)SHA-256: 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824 UTF-8 bytes: 5
hello and hello followed by a newline produce different digests.
Common questions
Why can identical-looking text have different hashes?
Hidden spaces, line endings and different Unicode sequences may differ. Input is neither trimmed nor Unicode-normalized. Chinese characters and emoji can occupy several UTF-8 bytes.
Should I store account passwords using this?
No. Plain SHA-256 and SHA-512 are fast and unsalted, so they are not substitutes for dedicated password-storage schemes. This tool compares text digests; it is not a password database or encryption service.
